Escambia County, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- Escambia County's Natural Resources Conservation Division is set to conduct a prescribed burn in the Jones Swamp Wetland Preserve today. The burn will cover approximately 74 acres located south of Highway 98 and is supervised by a Florida Certified Prescribed Burn Manager, with assistance from the Florida Forest Service. Controlled burns are weather-dependent and conducted throughout the fall and winter to promote healthy ecosystems by mimicking natural fire patterns. Officials say the burns help maintain open understories, enhance soil fertility, and reduce the risk of larger wildfires by managing fuel loads.
