Mobile, AL (Newsradio 92.3) -- The final journey for the SS United States ends today. The ship is expected to arrive at the Port of Mobile shortly. As of shortly after 8 am, the ship had entered Mobile Bay.
Once it arrives in Mobile crews will begin prepping the ship to become the largest artificial reef in the world. She'll be docking at Modern American Recycling Services. The dock and facility are not open to the public. Once preparations are made the United States will be sunk south of Destin and Fort Walton Beach, but a location hasn't been officially determined yet.
