MIAMI, FL — Florida Republican Senator Rick Scott says he is fully behind President Donald Trump’s proposed healthcare plan and does not support renewing Obamacare subsidies.
Speaking in Miami, Scott described Trump’s plan — sometimes referred to as “Great Healthcare” — as one that would put money directly into the hands of patients rather than insurance companies. Scott says increased price transparency and direct consumer control would help drive down healthcare costs.
Scott also made it clear he does not support extending Affordable Care Act subsidies, which are set to expire. He argued those subsidies were never intended to be permanent and claims they have been used to help higher-income Americans afford coverage.
Some members of Congress have pushed to reinstate or extend the subsidies, warning that millions of Americans could see their insurance premiums rise if they expire. Scott, however, says renewing them would move the healthcare system further away from its original intent.
Scott says healthcare decisions should be made by patients and doctors — not insurance companies or the federal government — and believes Trump’s approach would shift power back to consumers.
The future of healthcare funding is expected to be a major topic of debate in Congress in the coming months as lawmakers consider competing proposals ahead of the next budget deadline.
