NO CHARGES FOR HANDGUN FOUND AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

It doesn't look like any charges will be filed in relation to the handgun that turned up at a local elementary school last week. It happened at C.A. Weiss Elementary School, investigators say the student didn't have any criminal intent and the parent made an attempt to secure the gun. Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons says the investigation revealed that the parent took reasonable safety precautions -- the PNJ reports that the handgun had been accidentally left in the child's diaper bag, where the parent carries it due to safety concerns about the neighborhood they live in. The on-duty SRO investigated when the gun was found, and reported the incident to the Department of Children and Families.
