GENERAL CHAPPIE JAMES PLAZ
Pensacola, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- It looks like another delay for the planned General Chappie James Memorial at the foot of the Three Mile Bridge. The state attorney general's office says they won't be ruling on whether the project is eligible to receive tourism tax dollar funding until who will owns the monument is hashed out. The property the monument would be built on is owned by the city, but the ownership of the memorial itself hasn't been determined. Escambia County Commisisoner Lumon May said he plans to speak with project developers and city officials later this week.
The memorial has been in limbo for quite a while now, but when it's built it will feature a large statue of General James, and a P-4 Phantom plane similar to the one he flew. General Chappie James was the first African-American to become a four star general in the US military.
