Pensacola, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- Pensacola Police say they'll maintain service levels regardless of what happens with a proposed property tax elimination bill working through the Florida Legislature.

House Joint Resolution 203 would eliminate property taxes on homesteads, which could cost the City of Pensacola an estimated $9 million. The bill's sponsor, Representative Monique Miller, suggested cities could outsource police services to county sheriffs to cut costs.

PPD Public Information Officer Mike Wood says those discussions aren't new.

"We've heard this before and talked about it over the years of a metropolitan government and one law enforcement agency," Wood said. "And that subject matter kind of comes and goes."

Wood says the department will do whatever is necessary to maintain quality service.

"We've seen the numbers low. We've had detectives and administrative personnel that normally aren't on the street, put that uniform back on and get on the street and answer those calls," Wood said. "So we're going to do whatever we have to do when we have to do it to make sure our citizens don't see any kind of lapse in our response time or the quality of the services that we provide."

The bill would need to pass both chambers and be approved by voters in a referendum to take effect.

Every year, families face the challenge of having a seriously ill child far from home. Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Florida offers a place where these families can stay close to their hospitalized children without the burden of extra costs. One of the biggest ways the community supports this mission is through Casual for Kids Day, formerly known as Kaps 4 Kids. This annual fundraiser invites businesses, groups, and individuals to wear a Casual for Kids t-shirt and take a casual day to raise awareness and funds for the charity.

This post explains how Casual for Kids Day works, why it matters, and how you can get involved to make a difference for families in need.

What is Casual for Kids Day?

Casual for Kids Day is a simple but powerful fundraiser. Participants purchase a specially designed t-shirt from CasualforKids.com and wear it on a designated day to show their support for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMH). The event encourages workplaces, schools, and community groups to take a casual day, swapping their usual dress code for the Casual for Kids t-shirt.

The goal is to raise funds that help RMH provide a home-away-from-home for families with children receiving medical treatment. These funds cover essentials like meals, lodging, and support services that ease the stress on families during difficult times.

Why Support Ronald McDonald House Charities?

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Florida serves hundreds of families each year. When a child is hospitalized, families often face long stays away from home, which can be costly and emotionally draining. RMH offers:

  • Comfortable lodging near hospitals

  • Nutritious meals for families

  • A supportive community environment

  • Access to resources and counseling

By supporting Casual for Kids Day, you help keep these services running. The charity relies heavily on community donations and fundraisers to maintain its facilities and programs.

How to Participate in Casual for Kids Day

Getting involved is easy and rewarding. Here’s how you can join:

  1. Order Your T-Shirt

Visit CasualforKids.com to select and purchase your Casual for Kids t-shirt. The shirts come in various sizes to fit kids and adults.

  2. Plan Your Casual Day

Coordinate with your workplace, school, or group to pick a day to wear the t-shirt. Many organizations use this as a fun way to build team spirit while supporting a cause.

  3. Spread the Word

Share your participation on social media or within your community to encourage others to join. The more people involved, the bigger the impact.

  4. Make a Donation

While buying a t-shirt supports the cause, consider making an additional donation to Ronald McDonald House Charities to further help families in need.

Real Impact of Casual for Kids Day

The funds raised through Casual for Kids Day directly support families facing medical crises. For example:

  • A family traveling from a rural area to a hospital in Pensacola can stay at the Ronald McDonald House without worrying about hotel costs.

  • Parents can access meals and laundry facilities, allowing them to focus on their child’s care.

  • Siblings have a safe place to play and relax, reducing stress for the entire family.

In 2023, Casual for Kids Day raised over $50,000, helping more than 300 families stay close during treatment. These numbers show how a simple act of wearing a t-shirt can create a ripple effect of kindness and support.

Tips for Making Your Casual for Kids Day Successful

To maximize your impact, consider these ideas:

  • Host a Fundraiser

Organize a bake sale, raffle, or silent auction alongside Casual for Kids Day to raise extra funds.

  • Involve Local Businesses

Ask local shops or restaurants to sponsor the event or donate items for fundraising.

  • Create Awareness Materials

Use flyers, emails, or presentations to educate your group about Ronald McDonald House Charities and why their support matters.

  • Encourage Group Photos

Share pictures of your team wearing the t-shirts to inspire others and build community spirit.

Why Your Support Matters Now

Healthcare costs and travel expenses can overwhelm families already dealing with the stress of a child’s illness. Ronald McDonald House Charities provides a lifeline, but it depends on community support to keep its doors open.

By joining Casual for Kids Day, you help ensure families have a safe, welcoming place to stay. You also send a message of hope and solidarity to those going through tough times.
