Escambia County, FL (NewsRadio 92.3) -- Escambia County commissioners voted 3-2 Thursday to approve a succession plan naming Senior Assistant County Attorney William Nelson as the county's next county attorney — bypassing a competitive public search process.
County Attorney Allison Rogers submitted her retirement notice in January, with her final day set for January 4th, 2027. Rogers has served as county attorney since 2008 and with the office since 1999. Her succession plan, which she drafted herself, recommended Nelson for the role based on his experience and familiarity with county operations.
Commissioners Ashley Hofberger, Steve Strohberger, and Steven Barry voted in favor. Commissioners Mike Kohler and Lumon May voted against, both arguing the position warrants an open competitive search where all qualified candidates — internal and external — have an opportunity to apply.
Commissioner Strohberger said his support came down to trust, telling Rogers that if a decision is already made, a public search would be a waste of time and money. Commissioner Kohler countered that a competitive process would be healthy and help restore public confidence at a time when the county has faced governance scrutiny.
Deputy County Attorney Kristin Hual was considered the other internal candidate. Commissioner May said he harbors no personal concerns about Nelson's qualifications but believes the county's two directly appointed positions — the administrator and the county attorney — deserve the rigor of a public process.
Allison Rogers will remain available to assist with the transition through the end of 2026.
