Pensacola, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- Waterfront Mission in Pensacola dished out 1,700 Thanksgiving meals this year — keeping a 76-year tradition alive and making sure no one in the community goes without a holiday dinner.Leaders say the need was even greater this time, partly because the government shutdown left many families unsure about their finances.

"People didn't know what to expect... they didn't know how long it was going to go on," said Executive Director Mark Isbell. More than a hundred volunteers helped roast 120 turkeys, stir 40 gallons of gravy, and prep all the usual Thanksgiving sides.

Most of the meals were delivered to homebound residents through Meals on Wheels. Isbell says the mission is focused on spreading love with the resources they have. Christmas volunteer sign-ups open December 1st.
