Surgical Mixup Kills Alabama Man in Walton County Hospital

Walton County, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- Family members say they want the doctor that accidentally removed William Bryan's liver to be held responsible for the mistake. It allegedly happened at Ascension Sacred Heart emerald Coast in Miramar Beach.

Bryan and his widow Beverly were on vacation in Destin when he had pains and was admitted to the hospital. She says she attempted to get permission to take him home to Alabama to see his own doctor -- but the hospital said he wouldn't survive the trip.

Beverly tells Channel 3 they took her husband into surgery and were supposed to remove his spleen, but removed his liver instead. He then bled to death in the operating room.

The family has hired Pensacola attorney Joe Zarzaur and intend to sue -- they also want Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky held liable on criminal charges. Zarzaur says the doctor reported the incident as if Bryan died from a complication of the spleen surgery, and not from having the wrong organ removed. The Walton County sheriff's office says they are investigating the case.
