Semmes officers mow elderly resident's overgrown yard, earn community award

A couple of Semmes police officers went above and beyond their usual patrol duties this week, earning recognition for helping an elderly woman tackle an overwhelming yard maintenance problem. Sergeant Brian Fillingim and Corporal Hand noticed the woman's grass and weeds had grown considerably during a call to her home. Rather than leave it at that, the officers decided to take action themselves. "We responded to a call at her house and we realized the grass was getting really tall, so myself and Corporal Hand spoke about it when it was over," Fillingim explained. The officers' initiative didn't go unnoticed. Their work earned them the Smiles Behind the Shield Award, recognition that highlights the kind of community-focused policing that builds trust between law enforcement and the neighborhoods they serve. The gesture underscores how small acts of service—especially for vulnerable residents who may struggle with physical tasks—can make a meaningful difference in people's lives.
