SCHOOL BOARD BOOK REMOVAL PROCESSES

The Escambia County school board voted to allow the superintendent to pull books listed on the state Department of Education's banned book list without further review by a book challenge committee. That decision came at last night's school board meeting. The district will maintain book review committees for books that are challenged at a district level. The board voted to remove 18 books that have already been reviewed by media specialists. The board also voted to pause the purchase of new books until a better process to screen out pornographic materials is implemented. The school board will take that up in July.
