Pensacola, FL (Newsradio 92.3) --We've got an official date for the activation of several red light cameras in Pensacola....
"We continue to go down the road with our intent of January 1st," Mayor DC Reeves announced at a press conference on Tuesday.
Reeves says the goal of the program is to reduce traffic crashes and injuries, and not to be a 'money maker' for the city. He says there have been 377 crashes at the five intersections where cameras are being installed in the last two years. Cameras will be installed at 9th and Bayou, 9th and Airport, 9th and Fairfield, 9th and Gregory, and Davis and Fairfield.
During his press conference the mayor discussed 'myths' about the cameras that he says are spreading on social media. He says the timing of traffic lights is not being adjusted to issue more fines, and he says the system is not there to make money for the city -- he says most of the money goes to the state or to the vendor that supplies the equipment.
Fines will be around $150 and will be a civil infraction -- but if they are not paid a criminal citation could be issued and fines would increase, and drivers could risk losing their license.
