Pensacola Beach Shatters Traffic Record as County Pushes Forward on Multiple Solutions

Pensacola Beach, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- Pensacola Beach set a new all-time single-day traffic record last Saturday — and Escambia County Commission Chairman Ashlee Hofberger says the county is attacking the problem from multiple directions at once.
More than 27,690 vehicles passed through the Pensacola Beach toll plaza in a single day — narrowly eclipsing the previous record of 27,674 set last June. Hofberger says the numbers tell a bigger story than just one busy Saturday. The previous traffic study found 12 days a year exceeding 20,000 vehicles — last year the beach hit that threshold 50 times before Labor Day.
A comprehensive Traffic Congestion Management Plan is currently underway and concludes at the end of June. Hofberger says the study will drive recommendations on parking structures — including whether a parking deck on the island is feasible, where it would go, and how people would move in and out of it. The county wanted a full year of data before drawing conclusions.
In the meantime, construction is already underway on the Pensacola Beach Gateway Improvements Project — which will replace the aging toll plaza with a modern overhead gantry system similar to what drivers encounter on South Florida toll roads. Hofberger says the toll plaza itself is one of the first major bottlenecks — the technology is so outdated the county can't even get replacement parts, which is why one lane has been down. The gantry system will allow traffic to flow through without drivers stopping to pay. The project also includes fiber upgrades to improve traffic signal controls.
For residents and visitors looking to avoid the bridge traffic entirely, Hofberger says options are already in place. Beach trolleys are currently running on the island — schedules are available at the SRA website or MyEscambia.com. Starting Memorial Day, a beach hopper bus will run from downtown Pensacola to the beach on a regular schedule. Hofberger says drivers can park free at the county parking garage on Bayland Street and catch the bus there — allowing for a full day that includes the Palafox Market in the morning and the beach in the afternoon without ever sitting in bridge traffic.
