Orlando Airport Lands Historic Air Taxi at Nation's First Commercial Vertipad

Florida achieved another milestone in advanced aviation technology Wednesday as Joby Aviation successfully completed a test flight at Orlando International Airport, landing an electric air taxi at the nation's first dedicated vertipad built at a commercial airport. The demonstration marks the second major flight in Florida's Future of Flight Series and represents a significant step toward integrating flying cars into the state's transportation network.

The vertipad at MCO is purpose-built infrastructure designed specifically for electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, or eVTOLs. According to Joby's Chief Policy Officer Greg Bowles, the project required two years of simulator testing to prove that air taxis could safely operate in the airspace around a major commercial airport without disrupting regular flight operations. "Today we demonstrated how quiet, electric, vertical lift aircraft can integrate into existing airspace," Bowles said.

Florida is participating in the Federal Aviation Administration's eVTOL and Advanced Air Mobility Integration Pilot Program, which is gathering real-world data to help the FAA develop regulations and procedures for commercial flying car service. The state has identified the Interstate 4 corridor between Orlando and Tampa as a primary route for initial commercial deployment. Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared Perdue called the achievement proof that "strategic investments in infrastructure can support the safe integration of emerging aircraft into our transportation system."

The successful landing at MCO follows Florida's first AAM test flight in late October, which recreated a historic 1914 commercial airline flight using next-generation aircraft. Officials say the vertipad and infrastructure development position Florida to launch the nation's first commercial air taxi services.
