Former Escambia Deputy Jailed for Fatal Perdido Crash

Escambia County, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- The off-duty Escambia County deputy involved in a deadly crash in Perdido Key last summer is now facing felony charges. 58-year-old Gregory Nesmith was arrested Sunday night and booked into the Escambia County Jail on two counts of vehicular homicide. He’s being held without bond. The Florida Highway Patrol says its investigation wrapped up Friday, leading to warrants for Nesmith. The crash happened on July 5th, while he was working an off-duty security shift at the Flora-Bama. Troopers say Nesmith hit two pedestrians in a crosswalk on Perdido Key Drive. Twenty-year-olds Nicole Moore and Jackson Cunningham, both from the Birmingham area, were killed. Nesmith has since resigned from the sheriff’s office after more than 30 years. Both families have filed civil lawsuits, claiming he was speeding at the time.
