Florida House Unanimously Backs Cursive Writing Requirement

Tallahassee, FL -- The Florida House has unanimously approved a bill that would require elementary school students to learn cursive writing. The proposal calls for cursive instruction in second through fifth grades, with students expected to demonstrate proficiency by the end of fifth grade. Supporters say the skill is important for reading foundational documents like the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. Critics argue cursive is already taught and warn the bill could add to student testing. A similar measure has not yet been taken up in the Senate.
