ECSO: 'Sickening' Dogfighting Operation Busted, Arrest Made

Escambia County, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- An Escambia County man is accused of running a dogfighting ring -- deputies arrested 32-year-old Jerney Purifoy last Friday after animal control officers responded to his home and found evidence that dogs were being trained to fight at the property...

"There's ropes outside, there's all these instruments of training," says Escambia County Chief Deputy Andy Hobbs. That discovery led to deputies getting a search warrant, Hobbs says the SWAT team entered the home and found more evidence of dogfighting -- such as IV bags, a book on training dogs for combat, and several firearms.

Hobbs says the alleged dogfighting ring is sickening, but he says this type of illicit activity also draws in other crimes such as drugs and illegal gambling. Purifoy faces animal cruelty charges; he's out of jail on $15-thousand dollars bond.
