Crestview Man Killed by Lightning Strike While Kayaking on Blackwater River

Santa Rosa County, FL (NewsRadio 92.3) -- A 20-year-old Crestview man is dead after being struck by lightning while kayaking on the Blackwater River Sunday. Florida Fish and Wildlife says Michael Aiden Vargas was on the water around noon when he was hit and fell from his kayak. His father and Navy M-W-R employees witnessed the strike and immediately began searching for him. Dive teams from FWC, Santa Rosa County, and Escambia County recovered Vargas's body from the water. The investigation is ongoing.
