Accused Campus Rapist Faces New Charge After Incident at Police Station

MIAMI — A man accused of sexually assaulting a Florida Memorial University student is now facing an additional charge after an incident caught on camera at a Miami Gardens police station.

Prosecutors say Steven Rivers grabbed the buttocks of the lead detective while being escorted out of the station following his arrest. The incident was captured on surveillance video and resulted in a new charge of battery on a law enforcement officer.

Rivers was already facing sexual battery charges related to an alleged on-campus assault at Florida Memorial University. Prosecutors added the new charge following the police station incident.

A Miami-Dade judge set Rivers’ bond at more than 500-thousand dollars, citing the seriousness of the allegations and Rivers’ criminal history. Court records show Rivers had been released from prison just last month after serving time for lewd and lascivious behavior.

During a bond hearing, the judge sharply criticized Rivers’ behavior, particularly the alleged actions involving the detective, and emphasized concerns about public safety.

Rivers remains in custody as the case moves forward. Prosecutors say the surveillance footage will play a key role in the battery charge, while investigators continue building their case related to the alleged sexual assault.

Florida Memorial University officials have not publicly commented on the case. The investigation remains ongoing, and Rivers is scheduled to return to court for future proceedings.
