West Highway 4 Resurfacing Work Begins; 13-Mile Project Set to Run Through Spring

Construction crews have begun work on a major resurfacing and improvement project on West Highway 4, with C.W. Roberts Contracting starting operations on Monday, Oct. 19. The 13-mile project will address deteriorating road base and asphalt while also replacing worn guardrails along the route.
According to Escambia County Community and Media Relations, the work involves milling operations to remove excess asphalt, repairing cracked layers, correcting base layer issues, and applying new asphalt in two stages to improve drainage and road longevity. Contractors plan to work in 2-3 mile segments to keep disruption manageable for regular commuters.
The full scope of improvements includes addressing the road slope for better water drainage and installing new guardrails in deteriorated sections. Weather and construction coordination will factor into the timeline, but county officials expect the project to wrap up by spring 2027. Escambia County is asking drivers to be patient as work continues.
