State to Limit SNAP Purchases Starting Next year

Tallahassee, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- Starting next year, Florida will limit what SNAP benefits can buy. The state is joining others in restricting purchases of sugary drinks, energy drinks, candy, and prepared desserts. Health experts say the move is needed—research shows more than 20 percent of SNAP purchases go toward sugary and processed snacks. Dr. Erin Mayfield, a lifestyle medicine doctor, says unhealthy eating drives chronic diseases and the restriction could help. However, some worry the policy limits choice for families who rely on SNAP. Retiree Louise Tolber says while healthier guidelines are good, she fears it could go too far. Dr. Mayfield says while it won't solve everything, it's an important step toward better public health.
