Pensacola, FL (NewsRadio 92.3) -- Lovebug season is underway in Florida, and drivers across the state are getting reminders every time they hit the highway. The University of Florida says the harmless flies typically swarm in April and May, then again in August and September. Numbers can vary widely from one part of the state to another. That includes Northwest Florida. The university says lovebugs were first recorded in Florida in Escambia County in 1949. They don't bite or sting, but their remains can damage car paint if they're left on too long. The advice is simple: wash them off quickly. A damp cloth or dryer sheet can help remove the mess.
