Alabama Health Dept. warns of rabies risk after bat bites in Baldwin County

The Alabama Department of Public Health has issued a warning to residents following several bat bite incidents in Baldwin County. Officials are urging people who may have been exposed to seek immediate medical attention, as rabies is a serious and potentially fatal disease if left untreated after exposure.
Bat bites can occur without a person realizing it, especially during sleep. Health officials recommend that anyone who suspects they may have been bitten by a bat — or who finds a bat in their home — should contact local health authorities or seek medical care promptly.
Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), a series of vaccinations given after potential exposure, is highly effective at preventing the disease when administered quickly. The Alabama Department of Public Health recommends avoiding contact with bats and calling animal control if one is found indoors.
