JUDGE DENIES REQUEST TO HALT MALCOLM YONGE DEMOLITION -- David Wayne
Pensacola, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- An Escambia County judge has denied a request for an emergency injunction to halt the demolition of the Malcolm Yonge Gym. According to the PNJ, the judge ruled that Jonathan Green didn't show how he has standing to seek the injunction yesterday. Green and a committee made up of 10 Pensacola city voters, including two former city council members, had registered with the city to collect signatures to put the demolition to a vote with a ballot referendum.
The committee does have a 14-day window to refile, however, demolition on the building is set to begin next Monday. Construction fencing has already been placed. The Malcolm Yonge Gym was deemed unsafe last year, the city council recently decided it wasn't worth investing more than $3,000,000 to restore.
