(NewsRadio Pensacola) Amid speculation about his cognitive abilities and mounting donor pressure, President Joe Biden has cancelled his re-election campaign against former President Donald J. Trump. He announced via social media his intent to stop his campaign and stated that he will address the nation later in the week
The President was diagnosed with COVID a few days ago and will likely wait until he is recovered to hold a press conference. Many American voters now are left to wonder how this will affect the upcoming Presidential election and particularly, who will be the Democratic Party nominee.
The Democratic National Convention (DNC) will be in Chicago on August 19 - 22 (NewsRadio Pensacola's Andrew McKay will be in attendance), where the delegates vote for the nominee. Usually, the delegates vote for the "remaining candidate" as we saw last week at the Republican National Convention (RNC) where all of the delegates voted for Donald J. Trump. However, the importance of delegates and their role has the spotlight in an open convention.
For 2024, the DNC has 4672 total delegates. Of those 4672, 3933 are pledged delegates who are pledged based on the votes allotted during the Presidential Primary elections of the States. President Biden received 3896 pledged delegates through the primaries and now, all 3896 delegates are "free agents." They can vote for any candidate who runs for the nomination.
Anyone can run for the nomination by gathering signatures from at least 300 delegates and no more than 600. Each delegate can only commit to one candidate.
Once the candidates are established, the DNC delegates will vote. The winner must have at the majority vote to win, which is 2258 votes. If the no candidate garners enough votes, then the will have a second ballot and so on until they have a majority, with one significant change. From the second ballot on, there will be additional votes allowed for automatic delegates, formerly described as superdelegates.
There are 739 automatic delegates and they include members of the DNC, Democratic members of Congress, Democratic governors, or distinguished party leaders such as former presidents and vice presidents, like Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Joe Biden and Al Gore.
Current rumored Democratic candidates for the open convention include Vice President Kamala Harris (whom President Biden endorsed), California Governor Gavin Newsom, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and even a possibility of former first lady Michelle Obama. There are also rumors that the DNC will recruit Robert F. Kennedy Jr (RFK, Jr) who continues to gain support as an independent. RFJ, Jr is a former Democrat currently running for President of the Reform Party after an unsuccessful run in the Democratic Primaries against Joe Biden.
