Florida Lawmakers Continue Working Out Differences in State Budget

TALLAHASSEE — Florida lawmakers began negotiations to finalize the state budget for the upcoming fiscal year yesterday. After a month-long stalemate primarily over tax cuts, both the House and Senate are working through differences in areas like health services, education, and environmental funding. Key issues include varying proposals for higher education funding, with the Senate suggesting $350 million for performance-based incentives, while the House proposed $250 million. Additionally, disagreements persist over the Family Empowerment Scholarship Program and funding for citrus research, as well as broader allocations for Everglades projects. The goal is to reach an agreement by June 16, allowing Governor Ron DeSantis time to review and sign the budget.
