Florida Executes Daniel Conahan for 1996 Charlotte County Murder

Florida carried out the execution of Daniel Owen Conahan Jr. on Thursday evening at Florida State Prison, ending a nearly three-decade legal process that began with a brutal killing in Charlotte County. Conahan, 72, was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m. following a lethal injection, according to the state Division of Corrections.

Conahan was convicted in the 1996 strangulation death of Richard Allen Montgomery, a 21-year-old whose case had haunted law enforcement for decades. The execution marked one of Florida's ongoing capital punishment cases, reflecting the lengthy appeals process that typically follows death sentences in the state.

The case centered on Charlotte County, located south of the Tampa Bay area, and the conviction ultimately led to Conahan's death sentence. While Florida has reduced its execution pace in recent years, Thursday's execution represented the state's continued use of capital punishment for cases involving violent crimes.
