Escambia County, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- Escambia County commissioners voted unanimously Thursday to pursue up to $25,000 in Tourist Development Tax funding to reimburse the City of Pensacola for Wednesday's Keyla Richardson American Idol homecoming event — a celebration that drew an estimated 10,000 people downtown and was filmed for a four-minute nationally televised segment on American Idol.

The item was brought by Commissioner Lumon May, who said he has known Richardson since she was five years old and called her homecoming one of the most significant tourism marketing moments the county has ever seen.

The funding request still needs approval from the Tourist Development Council before any money is released. If approved, the county would enter an interlocal agreement with the city to reimburse event-related expenses including the stage, labor, and production infrastructure used for the concert at Blue Wahoos Stadium.

With an estimated audience of 5.1 million viewers, county staff calculated the cost per impression at less than one cent — well below typical national advertising benchmarks.

Commissioner May noted that Visit Pensacola plans to amplify the broadcast through its own marketing channels, extending the reach of the exposure beyond the initial airing. The homecoming parade traveled down South Palafox Street before the concert, with thousands lining the route.

Commissioners across the board expressed enthusiasm for Richardson's run and encouraged residents to vote for her when American Idol airs Monday night. The board also approved $2,000 in District 3 community support funds for Gallery Night Pensacola, which organizers say works to bring similar community energy to downtown every month.
