DeSantis announces $20B Florida Turnpike expansion, service plaza upgrades

Governor Ron DeSantis announced a more than $20 billion investment Tuesday to widen Florida's Turnpike across its entire 320-mile mainline from South Florida through Central Florida to Interstate 75 in Wildwood, according to the Governor's Press Office.

The project, which is currently 55 percent complete, will expand every section of the mainline to six or more lanes, adding more than 965 lane miles of capacity statewide. Under DeSantis' administration, the Florida Department of Transportation has already added 384 lane miles across Florida's Turnpike System, including 179 along the mainline. Recent completed sections include the widening from State Road 50 in Clermont to Hancock Road in Minneola, finished in June 2026, and the section from the Dolphin Expressway to Northwest 106th Street in Miami-Dade County, completed in February 2024.

Beyond mainline expansion, FDOT announced nearly $8.5 million for new food concepts and customer service improvements at Turnpike service plazas, including renovated areas with Jimmy John's, Zaxby's, Villa Pizza, and Vending Oasis locations. The state also earmarked nearly $54 million to expand truck parking at the system, with a $53.8 million investment specifically improving roughly 150 parking spaces at Turkey Lake and Ocoee Service Plazas to support commercial drivers and Florida's supply chain.
