Pensacola, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- Birmingham has been selected over Pensacola as the site of a new U.S. Coast Guard training facility. The Coast Guard announced Wednesday it will use the former Birmingham-Southern College campus as its new training center. Pensacola was among the cities competing for the facility. The Coast Guard began searching for a new site last November after record-breaking recruitment numbers strained existing capacity. Officials say the Birmingham campus, which closed in May 2024, exceeded all requirements including space for 12-hundred recruits and proximity to a commercial airport.
