Escambia County Emergency Officials Credit Prior Disaster Experience for Faster Hurricane Response

Escambia County's emergency management team deployed lessons learned from previous disaster responses to speed up operations as Hurricane Isaias impacted the Florida Panhandle, according to Public Safety Director Eric Gilmore.

Gilmore told InWeekly that sending county staff to assist with recovery efforts in other parts of Florida following recent storms has significantly improved the department's readiness and coordination capabilities. The hands-on experience gained from those deployments has translated into sharper planning and faster mobilization when disasters strike locally.

The approach reflects a broader regional strategy where counties share resources and expertise during hurricanes and other emergencies, allowing emergency managers to anticipate challenges and streamline response protocols.

Escambia Schools Weighs Closing Lincoln Park, Warrington Elementary

The Escambia County School District is moving forward with plans to close Lincoln Park and Warrington elementary schools, prompting a community planning process that could reshape student attendance across the county.

A student attendance zone committee met this week to tackle the practical logistics of the proposed closures. The Student Attendance Zone Advisory Committee (SAZAC) convened on October 6 to begin drafting new attendance zones that would direct students from both schools to other district facilities, according to InWeekly reporting.

The move is part of ongoing district efforts to address enrollment and facility needs across Escambia County schools. Details about the timeline for the closures and which schools would absorb students from Lincoln Park and Warrington have not yet been finalized. The advisory committee's recommendations will likely guide the district's next steps in the closure process.

PENSACOLA BEACH, Fla. — The Emerald Coast Utilities Authority has lifted its precautionary boil-water notice for all of Pensacola Beach, marking another major step in the restoration of water service following Hurricane Isaias.

ECUA announced the all-clear at 10 a.m. Wednesday after water-quality testing confirmed the system met applicable requirements.

Most mainland Escambia County customers and all customers on Perdido Key were cleared Tuesday.

A limited number of mainland addresses remain under separate precautionary boil-water notices.

Those customers should continue boiling tap water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth and other consumption until ECUA specifically lifts the notice for their location.

Customers at remaining affected mainland addresses are being notified by ECUA.

The latest information is available through ECUA's official website.
