Florida Notifying Drivers After License and Vehicle Records Exposed in Data Breach

TALLAHASSEE, FL (NewsRadio 92.3) -- Florida motorists are being notified after an unauthorized intruder gained access to records maintained by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

FLHSMV says the incident happened Sept. 4 when a malicious actor using compromised credentials accessed department systems.

Information potentially affected includes driver's license and motor-vehicle data, document images and other personal information maintained by the department.

The state has not publicly disclosed how many Floridians were affected.

FLHSMV says it has found no evidence so far that the exposed information has been misused.

Notification letters are being mailed this week to current driver's license and identification-card holders whose information may have been compromised.

Those individuals are being offered one year of free credit and identity monitoring through Sontiq, a TransUnion company. The protection also includes $1 million in identity-theft insurance.

The state is also issuing a broader public notice because it may no longer have current addresses for some affected people who previously held a Florida driver's license, identification card or vehicle title.

FLHSMV is encouraging potentially affected Floridians to review account statements and credit reports, monitor financial and online accounts and consider placing a fraud alert or security freeze with the major credit bureaus.

People who previously held Florida licenses, identification cards or vehicle titles and don't receive a mailed notice can contact FLHSMV to determine whether they were affected.

Sen. Moody Highlights Cybersecurity Push for Floridians During National Month

U.S. Senator Ashley Moody is using National Cybersecurity Month to highlight her legislative work protecting Floridians from online threats, including predators targeting children and scammers preying on seniors.

"Criminals don't have to break into your home to steal from you—they can target you through a call, email or even a text," Moody said in a statement released Tuesday. "As U.S. Senator, I'm working to protect Floridians from online bad actors—including scammers, fraudsters, and child predators."

Moody is championing several pieces of legislation. She's backing the bipartisan Kids Online Safety Act, which would give young people and parents better tools and transparency to protect against online harms—a cause she supported during her time as Florida's Attorney General. She also recently introduced the STOP Scams Against Seniors Act to help law enforcement investigate and prosecute criminals targeting seniors through fraud. Moody is an original cosponsor of the No FAKES Act, which would prevent unauthorized use of voices and images in AI-generated deepfakes, and introduced the SWIPES Act to toughen penalties on gift card fraud and close loopholes criminals exploit.

During her tenure as Florida Attorney General, Moody created the Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit in 2023, which froze more than $17 million in illicit cryptocurrency funds and worked 40 active cases involving senior victims.

USPS Gears Up for Election Mail Delivery in 2026

The U.S. Postal Service says it's ready to handle ballot delivery for the 2026 election, with operations running smoothly across the country heading into the final stretch before November 3rd.

Postal officials held a briefing Tuesday to outline their election mail procedures and security measures. Postmaster General David Steiner said the organization is "confident and ready to deliver a successful Election Mail season," emphasizing that the Postal Service shares a commitment with voters to ensure ballots are handled securely and delivered reliably.

The agency's long-standing advice remains the same: voters should mail completed ballots at least one week before their election office's deadline. Through early October, the Postal Service reported strong performance, with 97.98 percent of ballot mail arriving on time according to service standards. Officials also noted that extraordinary processing measures will begin October 24 at postal facilities nationwide to expedite ballot handling.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service will work alongside the Postal Service to safeguard election mail and coordinate with election officials. In the 2024 general election, the Postal Service delivered 99.6 percent of ballots within three days of submission to election officials, according to a post-election analysis.
