First, there was American Magic making Pensacola a sailing destination by training here for the America's Cup. Now Olympic and professional sailors are here to compete in the GL-52 Southern Series. You might have noticed them out on Pensacola Bay, with their distinctive black sails this week. The GL52 Series is a racing fleet of 52-foot, high-performance sailboats that were initially designed to sail long-distance races, but with the GL52 Series, they're sailing shorter race circuits. Each boat has a crew of 15. The city of Pensacola is providing logistical support for the event, such as using the port facilities. Mayor D C Reeves said these types of events will generate revenue for local businesses.
