Walton County, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- Two people are dead after an exchange of gunfire at a dollar store in Walton County on Wednesday. The incident happened when Deputy William May was called to the store to remove a tresspasser. Walton County Sheriff Mike Adkinson held a press conference yesterday.
"Deputy May responded to the store, made contact with the suspect, there was a brief discussion," Adkisson said. "Within 10 seconds of the suspect walking out of the store, that suspect drew a firearm and fired multple rounds striking deputy Will May."
Sheriff Adkinson says May returned fire and shot the suspect who died at the scene. He says the deputy was wearing a bulletproof vest, but the fatal shot went under it.
Adkinson says first responders were unable to life flight May to the hospital, so he was taken by ambulance. He died several hours later. Deputy May leaves behind a wife and two children.
