UWF Stuns No. 16 Southern Illinois in Historic Division I Football Debut

The University of West Florida marked a milestone Thursday night with a stunning 34-31 victory over nationally-ranked Southern Illinois in its first-ever Division I football game. Playing at home, the Argonauts defeated the No. 16-ranked Salukis in a matchup that signaled UWF's successful transition to the higher level of college athletics.
The win represents a landmark moment for the university's football program, which only recently moved up from Division II. UWF's defense held strong down the stretch to secure the upset victory, suggesting the program may have the talent and coaching to compete effectively at the Division I level from the start.
The Argonauts will look to build on the momentum from their historic home opener when they travel to Central Arkansas next Saturday, September 5, for their second Division I contest. Early success could help establish UWF as a competitive newcomer to the FCS ranks.
