Sen. Scott Leads Hearing on U.S. Drug Manufacturing as Trump Admin Boosts Domestic Pharma

U.S. Senator Rick Scott held a Senate Special Committee on Aging hearing Wednesday to push for stronger domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing and reduce American dependence on foreign suppliers, particularly China and India. The Florida Republican's effort follows a Trump administration announcement this week committing to increased investment in onshore drug production—a move Scott had previously requested.

Scott has made pharmaceutical supply chain security a priority, citing national security concerns over reliance on foreign-made generic drugs and ingredients. Earlier this year, Scott and Ranking Member Kirsten Gillibrand introduced the CLEAR LABELS Act, which would require country-of-origin labeling on prescription drugs. That bill advanced through the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee in July.

Wednesday's hearing featured testimony from Kurt Orlofski, CEO of PAI Pharma in New Jersey; Christine Baeder, president of Apotex USA and LATAM in Weston, Florida; and Mihir Torsekar, a senior economist with the Coalition for a Prosperous America. Scott emphasized that federal agencies must now award manufacturing contracts to American companies to translate the administration's commitment into tangible domestic production capacity.
