Sculptor Who Crafted Chappie James Statue to go to Space

Pensacola, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- The world-famous sculptor who created Pensacola's Chappie James Jr. statue -- who also happens to be the first black man selected to be an astronaut back in the 60's is finally going to space. Ed Dwight was selected for an upcoming Blue Origin space flight.

The 90-year-old was previously selected to be the first black astronaut in 1961 by the JFK administration. He ended up being passed over for that role and went on to become a sculptor. Dwight's Chappie James Jr. statue will be the centerpiece at the Chappie James Memorial Plaza when it's completed.
