Santa Rosa County bracing for heavy rain, flash flooding risk from Tropical Depression Nine

Santa Rosa County Public Safety is monitoring Tropical Depression Nine as it approaches the region, with forecasters warning of heavy rain and potential flash flooding late this week and over the weekend. The extent of impacts will depend on the storm's exact track, but Santa Rosa County is under a slight risk for flash flooding Friday, October 9, and Saturday, October 10, according to a county alert issued Tuesday afternoon.

Heavy rainfall poses the greatest threat, particularly in urban areas or locations where storms repeatedly move over the same spots. The National Weather Service warns that flash flooding could affect low-lying areas, underpasses, and places with poor drainage. A high rip current risk is also in effect for Navarre Beach through at least Saturday, and county officials are reminding beachgoers never to swim without a lifeguard present.

Santa Rosa County Public Works is offering free sand on a first-come, first-served basis at four locations: the corner of Leisure Street and Citrus Drive in Navarre, Tiger Point Park in Gulf Breeze (1370 Tiger Park Lane), Pace Fire-Rescue (4773 Pace Patriot Boulevard), and the corner of Pine Forest Road and Carroll Road in Milton. Residents must provide their own sandbags and shovels, though bags can be purchased at local hardware stores. County officials stress that sandbags offer limited protection and recommend residents obtain flood insurance — which carries a mandatory 30-day waiting period.

Residents in flood-prone areas should know their evacuation zones, maintain disaster supply kits, and keep vehicle gas tanks at least half full. County officials also recommend clearing gutters and downspouts, trimming trees, and ensuring all family members have a weather alert plan in place. Real-time weather updates are available at weather.gov/mob and through AlertSantaRosa.com.
