Questions Remain Following Immigration Op in Gulf Shores

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Questions remain after federal agents conducted an immigration enforcement operation at the construction site for the new high school in Gulf Shores this week. 36 suspected illegal immigrants were taken into custody during the raid -- The Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Alabama task force is questioning how contractors and subcontractors failed to verify the legal status of their employees, as required by Alabama law through the E-Verify system. Acting Assistant Special Agent PJ Lavoie warned that businesses employing illegal aliens will face consequences, with potential penalties including the suspension of licenses for first offenses. This operation is the latest in ongoing federal efforts targeting construction sites in Baldwin and Mobile counties.
