PENSACOLA, Fla. — The Pensacola Police Department is mourning the death of Detective Angela Nieto, who was killed Wednesday night in an off-duty motorcycle crash on the Barrancas Avenue bridge over Bayou Chico.

The crash happened around 8 p.m. October 14.

According to Pensacola Police, Nieto was a passenger on a motorcycle being operated by a male friend. The motorcycle was traveling eastbound when the driver lost control while negotiating a curve.

Nieto died at the scene. The motorcycle's driver was transported to a local hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

During an interview Thursday morning on NewsRadio 92.3's Pensacola's Morning News, department spokesman Mike Wood described the loss as devastating for Nieto's family and fellow officers.

Wood said Nieto joined Pensacola Police as a cadet in January 2019 and became a sworn officer that July.

Before joining the department, she served in the military. Wood also described Nieto as a mother of two.

"She was one to serve," Wood said during the interview. "And I also want to say that she's a mother of two. So yeah, we're missing a good one here."

Wood said the department's Honor Guard responded Wednesday night, and law enforcement officers from several agencies participated in a procession following the crash.

The department is working to support Nieto's family and colleagues as funeral arrangements are made.

Pensacola Police and the Florida Highway Patrol are investigating the crash.

Authorities have not announced a determination of its cause.
