Pensacola, FL (Newsradio 92.3) --

Local leaders are on hand at the Pensacola airport today for a groundbreaking ceremony for the new terminal. Leaders just announced new passenger numbers for the last fiscal year....

"This is such an awesome day.... something years in the making," Pensacola Mayor DC Reeves told Newsradio 92.3 "We have an airport designed for about a million passengers... and we just had 3.1 million come through.... What an amazing compliment that we've outgrown. by triple, the facilities that we have."

Reeves says it's time to "turn the dirt" on the new expansion -- which will include five new gates, which will open the door for larger airlines and more non-stop flights. Reeves says it will be a huge project for our economic development. The terminal is expected to be operational by Fall of 2027.
