Mobile County Schools Earn National Recognition for Attendance Gains

The Mobile County Public School System is being recognized nationally for making significant strides in reducing chronic absenteeism, according to a school system news release. Attendance Works, an organization that tracks school attendance patterns across the country, credited MCPSS with "impressive progress" in addressing what has become a widespread challenge in American education.

Chronic absenteeism—typically defined as missing 10 percent or more of school days—has been identified by education experts as a critical factor affecting student achievement and long-term outcomes. The recognition suggests Mobile County's efforts to keep students in classrooms are paying off.

The school system did not immediately provide specific attendance figures or detail which programs or initiatives drove the improvement. MCPSS serves more than 60,000 students across Mobile County.
