Major Airport Conference Highlights Pensacola's Convention-Space Limitations
PENSACOLA, FL (NewsRadio 92.3) -- Pensacola has landed a major aviation industry conference for next year, but city leaders say where the event will be held illustrates a longstanding limitation on Pensacola's ability to attract larger conventions.
The Southeast Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives will hold its 2027 annual conference in the Pensacola area March 20-24.
Hundreds of airport executives, aviation professionals, consultants and industry representatives from across the Southeast are expected to attend.
Pensacola International Airport officials presented plans for the event to City Council during Monday's Agenda Conference.
Airport officials said an event of roughly 600 people essentially pushes the limits of what the area can currently accommodate in a concentrated conference setting.
Most conference activities and hotel rooms will be on Pensacola Beach. The Hilton Pensacola Beach will serve as the official conference venue, with additional room blocks at neighboring beachfront hotels.
That prompted Mayor D.C. Reeves to point out that despite Pensacola hosting the event, the conference couldn't realistically be based inside Pensacola city limits.
Reeves said Pensacola lacks the combination of concentrated hotel rooms and meeting space necessary to compete for some larger conferences. He cited the U.S. Conference of Mayors as an example of an event the city currently wouldn't qualify to host because of those limitations.
Council members connected the discussion to the longstanding regional conversation surrounding the future of the Pensacola Bay Center and convention facilities.
Airport officials said Pensacola could also potentially compete for larger American Association of Airport Executives events if the community had facilities capable of accommodating more than 1,000 attendees in a single location.
The 2027 Southeast conference will have an operating budget of approximately $800,000, funded primarily through attendee registration and sponsorships.
Registration for the Pensacola Beach conference is already underway.
