PENARTS THEATER GROUP HONORING WASP SERVICEMEMBERS WITH PLAY -- David Wayne
Pensacola, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- March is Women's History Month -- and a local theater group is celebrating with a program to honor women in the military during World War 2. The play follows women in the Air Force's WASP -- or Women's Airforce Service Program that wasn't acknowledged for their service until later in life....
"It's important to share the stories of these women whose stories at the time did not get told and they actually until more recently were not broadcast for the public to know about," PenArts actor Katie Smith told Channel 3.
Smith is playing Virginia Hascall in the Decision Height play. The women in the WASP program weren't recognized with veteran status until 1977. The surviving pilots got a Congressional gold medal in 2009.
During the play, any female veterans in the crowd will be honored. Decision Height starts this Thursday at the Gordon Community Art Center.
