Florida Turnpike Expansion Hits 55% Complete With $20B Widening Plan

Governor Ron DeSantis announced progress on a major statewide infrastructure initiative today, highlighting more than $20 billion in investments to widen Florida's Turnpike along its entire 320-mile mainline stretching from South Florida through Central Florida to Interstate 75 near Wildwood.

According to the Florida Department of Transportation, the widening project is currently 55 percent complete and will eventually expand every section of the mainline to six or more lanes. Once finished, the improvements are expected to add more than 965 lane miles of capacity to reduce congestion across one of Florida's busiest corridors. To date, FDOT has already added 384 lane miles across the Turnpike system, including 179 miles along the mainline itself.

Beyond roadway expansion, the state is also investing in traveler amenities and commercial driver support. FDOT announced nearly $8.5 million to refresh food options and amenities at service plazas, with new vendors including Jimmy John's, Zaxby's, and Villa Pizza now open at multiple locations. An additional $53.8 million will expand truck parking at Turkey Lake and Ocoee Service Plazas, adding nearly 150 parking spaces to support commercial drivers.

Recent completed sections include a widening project between State Road 50 in Clermont and Hancock Road in Minneola, finished in June 2026, and a stretch from Northwest 106th Street to I-75 in Miami-Dade County that recently opened to traffic. FDOT Secretary Jared Perdue noted that transportation infrastructure improvements directly support Florida's quality of life by connecting residents to jobs and economic opportunities.
