Escambia County to Vote on $100K State Grant for Beach Cleanup

Escambia County commissioners will vote Thursday on accepting a $100,000 state grant aimed at tackling sargassum, red tide, and other biological debris washing up on local beaches and waterfronts. The funding marks the first year the state legislature has made this type of money available to counties dealing with marine debris problems.

This year's sargassum bloom is shaping up to be among the largest on record, according to county officials. Environmental scientist Sava Verazo cautions that the seaweed can harbor harmful bacteria, so anyone handling it should wear gloves to avoid potential skin contact with pathogens.

SRIA Director Mike Burns underscores the importance of keeping Pensacola Beach clean to maintain its standing as one of the nation's top beach destinations. The grant funding will help support cleanup efforts that protect both the beach's reputation and public health as seasonal blooms continue to affect the area.
