Escambia County Schools Removed 22 Books in 2024-25 School Year

Escambia County schools removed 22 books from their collections during the 2024-25 school year, according to data shared on social media during Banned Books Week. The removals place Escambia third among Florida counties tracked in the report, behind Clay County with 282 removals and Polk County with 53.

Santa Rosa County, which borders Escambia, had 17 book removals during the same period. Other Northwest Florida counties showed lower removal numbers: Bay County reported 10 removals and Marion County also reported 10.

The data was compiled and shared by Casey Reads, a social media account focused on book access issues, as part of Banned Books Week awareness. The report does not specify which titles were removed or the reasons behind individual removals.
