Escambia County Approves New Budget for Sheriff's Office

Escambia County, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- Escambia County is investing in its law enforcement operations. The county board of commissioners recently approved a record-setting budget for the sheriff's office which will allow for hiring more deputies....

"Ultimately, what I looked at is how many deputies we have," says Sheriff Chip Simmons. "With all the future growth that's going on, I think we should be at around 500 deputies in Escambia County." Currently though, he says they have 448.

With the new budget, 8 more deputies will be hired this year, and several more each year following. That will bring Simmons closer to the number he believes they need.

The budget will also allow for pay raises, which Simmons says will be larger at the lower end of the pay scale for patrol deputies.

The county will spend roughly $102 million per year on the sheriff's office for the next three years under the agreement.
