After more than a year of restoration work, ECUA is reopening the Bayou Marcus Boardwalk trail today...
"We constructed a mile-and-a-half long raised boardwalk through the wetlands that is just beautiful," says ECUA Executive Director Bruce Woody. He says the area has a large population of native wildlife including "a large and diverse bird population... there's deer, turkeys, foxes, raccoons, beavers, bobcats, snakes, otters, alligators.... lots of things to see."
The boardwalk has been under restoration for the last 13-months as part of a $4-million-dollar project. Woody says the entire boardwalk has been redecked and new handrails have been put up. ECUA officials are planning a ribbon cutting for 9 am this morning.
"The quench buggy will be out...and it's an opportunity to open the gates and return that back to the public... we're real excited about it," said Woody.
The ceremony will be held at the Boardwalk ramp, which is near the trailhead parking area. Speakers include Bruce Woody, ECUA Board Chair Vicky Campbell, and Tammy Thurow from the Perdido Key Chamber of Commerce.
