Gulf Breeze, FL (Newsradio 92.3) -- A driver is mostly unscathed after his car ran off the Bob Sikes bridge yesterday. It happened just before 8 o'clock Sunday morning in the middle of a heavy rainstorm. Gulf Breeze police say the car hydroplaned and crashed through the guardrail on the side of the bridge, then crashed between the two spans of bridge and into the water below. Two fishermen that were underneath the bridge heard the commotion then saw the vehicle land in the water. They tell Channel 3 that they were about to jump in and attempt a rescue when the driver popped up and swam to shore on his own. Gulf Breeze police estimate he was only driving around 30-miles-per-hour when the crash happened. The car has since been extracted from the bay.
